JAYNE SMILEY

 

 

 

Jayne Smiley has had a lifelong and keen interest in the body, mind and spirit of the human species! After many years of exploring various modalities of movement, (running, dance, Alexander Technique, Qi Gong, etc.) she was introduced to Iyengar Yoga, and quickly realized the integrity and wisdom of this approach and its potential for health and growth.

 

Jayne is an Internationally Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher who has been enthusiastically practising and studying since 1998, and teaching since 2005,  the year in which she opened Yoga Junction.

To be a certified Iyengar teacher means a commitment to continued study and development of personal practice and teaching skill.  This commitment includes weekly attendance at classes, peer teaching study group, and also workshops throughout the year.  In addition, Jayne has apprenticed in medical classes under the supervision of her senior teacher, Marlene Mawhinney.  She has taken workshops with numerous senior teachers, including Abhijata Iyengar, Jawahar Bangera,  Eyal Shifroni, Raya Uma Datta, Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh, Elise Miller, Louie Ettling, Fr Joe Pereira, Mahyar Raz, Dr. Nidmarti Rajlaxmi Sudhirkumar and Stephanie Quirk.  Jayne has been a member of the Iyengar Association of Canada since 2005. 

 

Jayne brings her own unique life experience to her teaching.  She is a professional musician who has had an extensive performing career.  She has taught singing and music in her private studio as well as in numerous Canadian institutions including York University, The Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and The National Ballet School.  Additionally, Jayne was co-director of the Royal Conservatory of Music Summer Opera Programme for ten years and was a faculty member at the Glenn Gould School.
