TEACHER TRAINING

Iyengar Yoga is unique in its rigorous approach to training teachers, a demanding apprenticeship programme created by B.K.S. Iyengar.   Teachers must have studied Iyengar Yoga for at least 2 years at a 2/3 level and under a Senior Teacher before being considered for the programme (which in Canada is recognized by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities).  In order to attain the first level teaching certificate, training teachers commit to 3 to 5 years of study including the following –

  • weekly classes

  • workshops

  • weekly teacher training classes

  • philosophy classes

  • basic anatomy classes

  • apprenticeship in regular classes and special medical classes

After the first level certificate, teachers regularly move forward into more advanced certificates.  To maintain standing as a teacher in Canada, one must commit to a minimum of 50 hours of training per year.  An Iyengar yoga teacher commits to a lifetime of practice and study.
